Golden Anniversary for Matsumoto / Salt Lake Sister City Relationship in 2008

In 1958, Salt Lake City and Matsumoto, Japan were designated as Sister Cities. In 2008, we will celebrate the 50-year anniversary of the relationship. The Sister City Program was developed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1956 with a mission to, “Promote peace through mutual respect, understanding, and cooperation – one individual, one community at a time.”The Matsumoto/Salt Lake tie grew out of this mission and in recognition of the similarities between the two cities. It is our sincere desire to celebrate the relationship, not only for our community, but to demonstrate what people can achieve through friendship. The theme of our Golden Anniversary celebration is Peace Through People. This theme exemplifies the friendship, cultural exchange and education that the two cities share.

To celebrate this milestone achievement, we plan to involve as many people in the community as possible.A few of the activities planned for 2007 and 2008 are:

  • Exhibit gifts from Matsumoto to the people of Salt Lake at the Salt Lake Main Library
  • Host Japan’s Living National Treasure, a kite master, for demonstrations and workshops
  • Sponsor a float in the Days of ‘47 Parade
  • Promote cultural exchanges between the cities
